How to use the metal weight calculator

  1. 1

    Choose the material, such as Mild Steel (MS), SS 304 or Aluminium. Pick "Custom density" for any other metal.

  2. 2

    Select the shape — round bar, plate, pipe, angle and more.

  3. 3

    Choose your units and enter the dimensions shown in the diagram. The weight updates as you type.

  4. 4

    Enter the number of pieces and, optionally, the rate per kg to get the total weight and cost. Tap "Copy result" to share it on WhatsApp.

Metal weight formulas

Every shape uses the same rule: Weight (kg) = Volume (m³) × Density (kg/m³). All dimensions are first converted to metres. The volume of each shape is:

Round bar
Volume = π ÷ 4 × D² × L
Square bar
Volume = A² × L
Flat / Plate
Volume = W × T × L
Sheet
Volume = W × L × T
Round pipe / tube
Volume = π × T × (OD − T) × L
Square tube
Volume = (A² − (A − 2T)²) × L
Rectangular tube
Volume = (W × H − (W − 2T) × (H − 2T)) × L
Hexagon bar
Volume = (√3 ÷ 2) × AF² × L ≈ 0.866 × AF² × L
Angle (L section)
Volume = T × (A + B − T) × L
Ring / Washer
Volume = π ÷ 4 × (OD² − ID²) × T

Frequently asked questions

How to calculate MS plate weight?
Multiply length (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × 7.85. For example, a 1 m × 1 m plate that is 10 mm thick weighs 1 × 1 × 10 × 7.85 = 78.5 kg. The same rule works for MS sheets and flats.
What is the density of mild steel?
Mild steel (MS) has a density of about 7850 kg/m³, which is 7.85 g/cm³. That is why a 1 m³ block of MS weighs 7.85 tonnes.
How to calculate pipe weight per meter?
For an MS pipe, weight per meter (kg) = (OD − T) × T × 0.02466, with outer diameter (OD) and wall thickness (T) in mm. For example, a 48.3 mm OD pipe with 3.2 mm wall weighs (48.3 − 3.2) × 3.2 × 0.02466 ≈ 3.56 kg per meter.
How to calculate round bar weight?
For an MS round bar, weight per meter (kg) ≈ D² × 0.00617, where D is the diameter in mm (often written as D² ÷ 162). A 25 mm bar weighs about 3.85 kg per meter.
Is SS heavier than MS?
Slightly. Stainless steel 304 (7930 kg/m³) is about 1% heavier than mild steel (7850 kg/m³), and SS 316 (8000 kg/m³) is about 2% heavier. For the same size, the weight difference is small but the price difference is large.
How much lighter is aluminium than steel?
Aluminium (2700 kg/m³) weighs roughly one third of mild steel (7850 kg/m³) for the same size.
Why is the actual weight different from the calculated weight?
Real material has rolling tolerances, and tubes and angles have rounded corners while this calculator assumes sharp ones. Coatings such as galvanising also add weight. Expect actual weight to differ by a few percent; use the supplier's weight chart for billing.
